REVIEW:
Fourteen all new uncut episodes of pure ninja dueling excitement are contained within this collection. This box set covers the entirety of the Third Round of the Chunin Exams, which is so far the most intense series of episodes yet. The fights have never been this intense or this personal.

The subplot driving the undercurrent of this arc is the emergence of one of the three legendary ninjas – and the most feared: Ochimaru. He wants Sasuke, has even gone so far as to put the Curse Mark upon the boy, but his sinister goals remain shrouded in mystery for now. At one point he even comes face to face with Kakashi who is determined to protect his young charge, but between Ochimaru’s indirect and insidious attacks and a traitor within the midst of the Leaf Village, Kakashi and the rest of those on the side of good will have a very great menace to face.

The main theme of this series of episodes is of course the Third Round of the Chunin Exams. No matter who you’re a fan of, you’ll see them battle it out in one desperate, al-or-nothing duel after another. Some of the battles are intensely personal, such as when Hinata must face a member of her own family when she must fight Neji. The gentle girl wouldn’t seem to have a chance against Neji’s ruthless attacks, especially when he seems intent on slamming her down with everything he has. But sweet and kind Hinata will show that she has strengths of her own that will surprise both Neji and her peers. In the case of Hinata, Sakura, Lee and the other participants, flashbacks to poignant childhood moments are often shown, adding to the high emotionality of the battles.

She’s not the only one to show unexpected abilities under great duress. Sakura’s battle with her childhood friend turned rival Ino, not only reveals the touching past of these two girls, but their growing strength as young women and progressing ninjas. Naruto joins those ranks when he displays that he can use his head for a change when he battles a strong opponent.

Meanwhile, devastating techniques are displayed by rivals and friends alike during the various duels. The Sand Village show just how vicious and overwhelming their powers are in one brutal attack after another. The Sound Village is revealed to have an unexpected tie in with Ochimaru. And the Leaf Village displays some astonishing abilities, some which are even unnerving.

It’s Lee who steals the show in this box set however. Love or hate “Bushy Brows”, he’ll win you over when he faces the fearsome Gaara of the Sand Village in a grueling match that may see one of them never to rise again! This is the uncut version after all, the battles are brutal, the damage sometimes horrendous, and Lee may pay the ultimate price facing the most frightening opponent in the Chunin Exams. During this immense battle, Lee’s perseverance and will are inspiring, the battle techniques riveting, and you’ll be on the edge of your seat to find out what will happen next.

The final episode is a much-needed winding down after the intense dramatic action of this arc. With the Third Round over, the remaining participants have one month to train before the Fourth and final round begins. Naruto must work on eliminating his weaknesses and gaining control over his chakra. But it’s not Kakashi who will be training him. He has none other than “Closet Perv” Ebisu back in his life giving him a hard time. This episode offers a lot of comedy while still imparting a great deal of information about Naruto, the other fighters, and the exam to come.
