D'Eon confronts an enemy in an alleyway in the dead of night. When he is defeated by his blade, he tells D'Eon that France will change whether he wants it to or not. Disgusted at D'Eon's aristocratic nature, saying he only looks to the palaces and riches rather than considering those less fortunate than him who are starving in the streets.
Durand mentions to D'Eon, Teillagory and Robin that Vorontsov is to meet with a Tailor in Sorbonne that night on business. D'Eon thinks he must know they are pursuing him and close to capturing him. Robin has something important to tell D'Eon about his faux-pas at Anna. Angry with him for what he said, he thinks it would be a good idea to apologise to her while he sorts out other affairs for him. D'Eon, in ire rebukes his offer, but not before Robin gives him a piece of his mind. Anna and D'Eon in a coach talk of their problems. Anna reassures him by saying he has not lost everything, unaware that D'Eon had spoken those words under the influence of Lia's soul. Anna is still frustrated about him not telling her what is on his mind and he says he will in time. In confessional at the local Church, D'Eon pours out his feelings, sensing that he is full of shame at his suspicion of the king, yet he is also is confused about the strange goings on since Lia's death. The father tells him as a Knight he has a great duty to perform. Also at Easter Anna is in a confessional booth recounting her feelings of how jealous she is of Lia, and how she desires for him to abandon his quest. He absolves hre and she is left in turmoil. When D'Eon and Anna go back in the coach they are disturbed by scenes of the poor and needy lining the streets in rags and with nothing but the clothes they wear living in makeshift tents. He asks the driver to take another street but it is too late, the peasants block their way. Urging Anna away, D'Eon dashes out of the coach, hoping to help out another driver of a coach down the street who is being attacked by the peasants. When he gets up close he sees the elusive Vorontsov open the coach door, waving his rapier at them, warding them away. Vorontsov makes a quick getaway before D'Eon can get to him. Soon he finds his trail and spots Vorontsov down an alleyway saying he resembles Anna so much and lets him know he realises he is on a quest to find his sister's killer. Then before he leaves, he shouts him to thank Le Secret du Roi for him. D'Eon gets back to the other three and mentions the day's events. Durand says his meeting with the Tailor went well enough and he found out that a dealer paid him off to spread information tht was untrue to put them off the scent. The plan is to tell the King of all this. So on horseback, the four of them travel to the palace. D'Eon mentions that Vorontsov said something disturbing to him and Teillagory says that there is a traitor that is in their midst. The four musketeers reach the harbour when another coach which appears at first to be empty of passengers, the driver comes back carrying carrot supplies for his horses. They ask him about the man he picked up and he tells him Vorontsov is on the ship in the distance on his way to Russia. Meeting with the King, D'Eon and the other three are given permission to question the Duc and he reveals to them he hid revolutionaries and spies, but denies being involved in Lia De Beaumont's murder. They take away his Duc title and the power that goes with it. Marie speaks with Belle in the royal palace about D'Eon's refusal to accept Lia's tormented and agonised soul, and they want him to as Lia needs D'Eon as a vessel for her soul if they are to unlock the secret of the royal Psalms. And as such, they need Lia's soul to stay in place within D'Eon's body. The four musketeers find that the man who took the Psalms also took Lia's life, but who is he? There is more about the royal Psalms, a traitor in the ranks and Russia holds the key in this gripping story of intrigue and the build up to the next volume and a possible revolution. It is so easy to get wrapped up in this second volume which lives up to the strength of the previous one. The characters are memorable, potent and the entire story grips the viewer until the very end leaving them wanting to find out more about D'Eon, Lia and all the other characters who are all as interesting as the four musketeers them selves. The animation is wonderful and the colours as vibrant as before. This volume just impresses the viewer more this time around.
