Pani Poni Dash is just cool. If it’s possible for a series to get continually more stylish as each new volume comes out, Pani Poni Dash is doing just that. Rather than slowing down as it is getting closer to the ending, this series manages to keep the frantic pace throughout, and in fact may be getting even crazier. The latest opening sequence will leave you with a smirk and thinking: “Wow, I’ve stumbled across something pretty cool here.” It’s quite the joining of pop style artistic genius, and insane anime humour influence. It’s like Excel Saga meets Azumanga Daioh, but with a lot more consideration for ascetic style.
With volume 5, we start off with an attack on the characters’ immunities. Some supposedly animal induced illness has started to plague the school. And what’s worse than having a sick teacher? Having your sick teacher be a really cranky 11-year-old, that’s what. And when this bug quarantines the whole school, it’s not just temperatures rising, but tempers. All this can only lead to dangerously hilarious levels of… hilarity! Things get even weirder when Ichijo electrocutes Himeko (no kidding), turning her into a world conquering maniac (of course!), while the drama club and the film club finally come to blows in their longstanding war against each other. The war of course includes one student in a Godzilla costume, and the other in a giant robot getup that she’s been waering for most of the series. Later, when Becky doesn’t show up for school, the girls decide to draft an imposter to replace her so she doesn’t get in trouble with the most terrifying presence at the school – the dreaded PTA! No one wants to be in trouble with the PTA! It’s more of the wonderful zany escapism that is the hallmark of Pani Poni Dash, and it’s all good. If you’re looking for some weird laughs, and want to be mentally electrified by your anime, Pani Poni Dash must be on your list. It’s not a hack, it’s not a re-hash of Excel Saga – it’s a prodigy of its own, and should become a comedy favorite once more of the population gets exposed too it. It’s very cool and packs such a punch when it comes to overwhelming amounts of content, giving it the added bonus of replay value! There’s not much bad to say about Pani Poni Dash – if anything at all. EXTRAS: AD Vid-Notes, Yellow Vacation Videos, In Class With The Cast, Reversible Cover, Clean Closing. IN SUMMARY: Pani Poni Dash is the kind of anime you would see being played on the big screen in the background at an anime costume rave. It’s very funny, very strange, and very much a jolt to the brain – those all being positive things of course!
