Things are getting pretty tense in The Wings of Rean, as the battle comes to a thunderhead. Tokyo Tower takes yet another tumble for the team (the generic anime occurrence is of course to have the Tokyo Tower horribly destroyed), and the air battles between the Aura Battlers get more intense with each engagement. If that weren’t enough, half the cast gets a blast from the past with a little time traveling action to World War II days in the Pacific. It’s all here in volume three!

Episode five begins with the Hojo Army and resistance force having passed through the Aura Road and emerged on Tokyo Bay. There, the two armies decide to join forces and follow the same path. In cooperation with the Hojo Army, Rori and Kanamoto strike down Tokyo Tower, shocking the city into a state of unprecedented chaos. Meanwhile, led by the Wings of Rean, Aesap and King Sakomizu arrive in Japan at the end of World War II. The skies are riddled with B-29s, atomic bombs, the battle of Okinawa – Sakomizu is filled with anger and sadness. Aesap sees his parents before he was born. When their journey to the past ends, they find themselves in the skies above present-day Tokyo Bay. The clash there should be something to look forward to – atleats for the audience!

We’re certainly getting a very clear picture of what is going on now in relation to people’s motivations and what happened in their pasts. The World War II sequence brought new revelations, and the puzzle almost completely comes together. As for the animation – top notch as usual. Each episode is like a little movie as the quality of the production is so high. The CG is especially cool, as it doesn’t take away from the traditional animation. For those of you that aren’t big fans of CG animation, The Wings of Rean makes the CG so seamless that you’ll probably end up appreciating it. Have we mentioned the music before? The soundtrack really adds a lot to the intensity and drama of the action sequences. Tense moments are made more so by a memorable score – yet another fine detail that makes the series stand out in a crowd.

Lastly, volume three comes with two really nice, lengthy booklets. One outlines a number of early sketches of characters and objects, while the other takes us behind the scenes to talk with the staff/artists. There are storyboards, preliminary sketches, interviews, and even explanations of each Aura Battler. This sort of extra work put into giving the consumer something of worth is much appreciated and won’t go unnoticed. It’s really great to be able to have this quick access to further insight and information about the series, especially after you’ve watched it and then want to know more. Thanks Bandai Visual!
