The musketeers arrive in England in search of the Royal Psalms, while D’Eon also searches for the man he believes murdered his sister – Maximilien. The English court is not the same as France, or their experiences in Russia. The Queen Mary has a particular interest in D’Eon…and his sister. Meanwhile, the political menace to France and the musketeers grow as their allies become their enemies in the latest thrilling volume of Le Chevalier D’Eon.

Every gripping episode of this anime unfurls more mysteries and intrigue than most shows do in an entire series. D’Eon and his companions find themselves in a complex maze of international intrigue, deception, murder, and betrayal. When their own allies move against them, D’Eon and the others are forced to hide and go underground in a country they do not know and are not welcome in. One of their own, Durand, must not only deal with his conflicting emotions towards Lia, but is forced to make a fateful choice that may cost him not only his honor, but his life. If only that were the only cost these brave men will suffer in this secret war against the arcane malice of the Poets. But alas, D’Eon is discovering that his time being possessed by the wrathful ghost of his sister comes with a price. She is appearing more often and with greater ease, D’Eon is even sharing her memories in jagged fragments. Soon it may get to the point where D’Eon will no longer be able to separate himself from his sister’s wraith.

There’s more he must contend with as the life his sister led bleeds into his consciousness more and more. There are disturbing memories, memories of Maximilien and Lia. And now Max wants D’Eon, or the soul of Lia within D’Eon, to finish what he started with her those long tragic months past, to finish what cost Lia her life, and will perhaps cost D’Eon his sanity. As her past comes to haunt D’Eon’s present, will he become a victim? As the awful, terrifying truth unravels, just whose side was Lia on?

The political and historical information involved in the series is dense material, some worth going over again to ensure the viewer catches every nuance and inference. The matters unfolding between D’Eon’s life, his sister’s past, and the unveiling of the Poets and their goals, deepen the absorbing plot of the series.  As the anime moves past the halfway point in the series and gears up towards the penultimate volume, the turns in D’Eon’s circumstances are happening faster and more harshly. It ratchets the tension up several notches. This happens quite notably when Queen Mary’s true motives are revealed, the possible fate of D’Eon and Lia are suggested, and the young swordsman is separated from Durand’s protection.

EXTRAS:
This volume is a bit slim on the extras Chevalier fans are used to. Bonus features include ADV previews, more wonderful Historical Notes thanks to the thorough work done by Janice Williams, and clean opening and closing animation.

IN SUMMARY:
Le Chevalier D’Eon is one of the most arresting anime series ever released. The latest volume sees D’Eon and his companions in England, where secrets uncoil like poisonous snakes ready to strike at the heart of our heroes.
