A young man named Yakumo is about to get a very special souvenir from his archeologist father, an immortal who is about to send him to his death and then devour his soul! Her name is Pai. She has a third eye, mystical powers, and no memory of the people she came from. When Yakumo helps her despite his resentment towards his negligent father, he ends up killed. Pai’s powers awaken and she devours Yakumo’s soul, rendering his body immortal. With the mark of Wu upon his forehead, he now travels the globe with Pai in search of the truth no matter the obstacles, the dangers, and the incredible creatures they meet along the way.
3x3 Eyes is a remarkable and engrossing fantasy adventure like few others. Based on the long running manga by the same name by Yuzo Takada (also the author of Blue Seed), this is a mystical adventure fraught with peril, action, and the growing bond between an immortal girl and a human with a good heart. This first volume contains the entire 4 episodes of the first of two OAV series. It covers how Pai and Yakumo first meet, how he becomes in effect, her slave, his parting from his life as he knew it, including school friends, and their first adventures in search of a statue that holds the key to the secrets of Pai’s past and her lost memories. Following the manga closely, the first OAV series plays very much like each episode is a chapter. Time passes between episodes, giving it a slightly fragmented feel but still easy to follow story. The characters they meet are almost as interesting as Pai herself. There’s occult expert and money getter Ling-Ling, the stubborn martial arts expert Mei Shin and her psychic brother Steve, a unicorn race, vampires, and many more mystical creatures. Each of the episodes runs thirty minutes long and in them, Pai And Yakumo face several dangers, discover part of the story behind her race, the Sanjiyan, and face the growing menace of the rise of Kaiyanwang and the power mad Sanjiyan, Benares. Tense and dramatic, this fantasy adventure holds a moving undercurrent of humanity within its story of supernatural terrors, mystical races, and the impending threat of Kaiyanwang. The glue that holds this story together is the two characters, Pai and Yakumo. Their growing friendship and blossoming romance in the face of overwhelming adversity is a poignant story. In it is the burning quest of immortality. Some would murder to get it, while others like Yakumo, value love, loyalty, and friendship over an eternal life. Curiously, the two main characters are both immortals. Pai as a Sanjiyan however desires to be turned into a human, while Yakumo after being turned into her Wu, wishes to become human again as well. We see Pai’s growing humanity when she tries to mingle with Yakumo’s friends, and later when a revelation leads to a decision and a heart rending sacrifice. This story which underlines their adventures gives 3x3 Eyes a heart that touches the viewer and humanizes these supernatural beings such as Pai. The animation is highly appealing with thundering action, suspense, and unexpected twists. The astounding score is by Kaoru Wada who worked on such prestigious titles as Samurai 7, Gilgamesh, Battle Angel Alita, Ninja Scroll, To Heart, D Gray Man, and others. EXTRAS: Bonus features include reversible cover art, Geneon previews, a line art gallery, full color gallery, and actor’s credits. IN SUMMARY: 3x3 Eyes is an absorbing fantasy adventure rich in imagination, action and suspense.
