wo rival clans sworn to hatred of one another are seen in the introduction as corpses on an abandoned battlefield, their souls hoping for peace in an age of destruction and malice. The dead wished that all that would be over and there would be a new, more prosperous age which would begin, but fate it seemed had a hand in the lives of both the Iga and the Kouga to be different, bringing them into another age of war, only for it to coincide with two of the rival clan members falling in love with each other.
Kagero of the Iga and the clan discuss Gennosuke and Oboro’s imminent marriage. Others disagree with it and see Oboro as nothing more than a tramp and want her killed. The other members want to see what will happen and support Gennosuke’s decision to wed her and that is his final word on the matter, though he informs them they should not blindly trust the rival clan. Hyoma hears footsteps coming from outside the compound, enemies are coming. He finds from their footfalls that there are assassins journeying from the north, and one of their groups is a female. Akeginu rejects Sosuke’s advances calling him a fat pig for coming to her room at night. She tells Gennosuke and his lover about it and they enjoy laughing about it together. They notice Tenzen and the others have not arrived back at the compound and are very worried by these events. Later the two clans are locked in combat when the Iga members tell the Kouga they bear a message from Subagakaru for Gennosuke, only for his small group of assassins to be rewarded with an assault. The Kouga thinking if they were indeed being friendly would not have come from the north to come there. An onslaught ensues as they become easy prey to the ghoulishly transforming Kouga. It is the Iga’s first time visiting Monchetaro and they are surprised at the nasty reception they have been given for only bearing a message for them. The Kouga confirm their reasoning by saying they only detain those who appear suspicious. They tell the Kouga that they came in peace, and that if they come to Subugakaru, they will receive the same treatment, only they will not walk out alive. The arrangement of the animation is perfect, the movements exiting and the clothing moves well with the characters making a more organic look to them. They are drawn with a considerable amount of shade and there are minimalist backrounds, which match the characters. The rendering of the hair is different and lovely as the females in this anime have their hair arranged in bows and ponytails, which look realistic. The introductory sequence in black and white is extremely striking which shows the combat between the factions, and how rival tribes sworn to hatred of each other have more than war on their minds now that the union of the two members in love will soon turn into matrimony. Within all the warring, there is a great amount of humour and comedy, which is a welcome break from learning about the separate clan’s hatred of one another. EXTRAS: Behind the scenes of Basilisk 2, Textless songs and trailers, Interviews with the Japanese voice actors, which are complete with subtitles. They discuss their characters and their action figures. The textless songs have a nice, heavy soundtrack behind them with beautiful animated sequences where the characters move fluidly with the music. IN SUMMARY: This is a wonderful, battle filled story with the sub story of the romantic involvement of Gennosuke and Oboro and works perfectly with the main story of the warring clans.
