The focus of the start is at a laboratory in semi – darkness which is in trouble as their new test subject wakes from sedation when it is not supposed to, breaks free from its bonds and causes havoc. Curiously, the scene cuts from view to the city of Romdo.
Romdo was created out of need after so many nuclear wars and ecological disasters, the city who has human and android inhabitants live in harmony and peace within a huge dome, sealed off from the outside world. Though Romdo seems all peaceful there is unrest, as the people are controlled by those above them and human emotion and the feelings that go with them are no longer needed and are suppressed. There is another problem with the peaceful feel of the city as murders have been occurring which are believed to have been committed by robots going insane who realise their own existence in the scheme of things in the domed city and want to be free. Though the people live in a controlled environment in this dark Science Fiction scenario, the government nor the people are prepared for what will happen as it builds up to something more darker and evil. The people of the city live along with androids called AutoReivs who live as servants to their human masters, though there is more to them than there is supposed to be. In between all of this darkness and despair is a woman called Re I, who conducts her business as a detective in the Intelligence Bureau. Along with her is AutoReiv Iggy, who aids her in her escapades investigating mysteries in the city, and even as she has been in a way conditioned by the society she lives in she later comes to the conclusion there is something wrong with where the people live, and she investigates further than she normally would due to the murders. Re I’s gothic look give more credence to the void the residents of Romdo live in. The case she is currently working on is investigating a mysterious new genetically induced life – form called a Proxy, which is on the run from its creators. Re I’s investigation leads her into even darker parts of society where she comes into contact with the Proxy and survives this meeting as fleeting as it was. As she continues to investigate, she ascertains the Proxy’s escape is a deadly secret that must be kept that way, and as she uncovers more, she becomes more in danger of her life. There is also another story that entwines around Re I’s and is about Vincent Law, who recently came to live in Romdo and is not given much of a welcome reception in the city as he would have thought. Vincent sees the world of Romdo through different eyes from Re I and Not through his own fault, he is now a man on the run himself as he had a brush with the Proxy as it went on the rampage at a busy mall killing its entourage, leaving him as a suspect. This will appeal to those interested in deep, dark Sci-fi thrillers mixed with a generous amount of gothic atmosphere. Though there is a certain light in this anime, the people who live there seem to live in perpetual darkness as it encloses their lives in despondency. The design is slick and detailed with a certain depth not normally associated with anime of this type. The colours are created as tonal rather than of separate colours and it gives a unique look to the visuals which is fitting to the story as it clarifies near the end. Radiohead’s Paranoid Android rumbles in the background as it represents the doomed darkness and emptiness of future society that is possible, making it eerily peculiar. Although this is the future, the characters live in the shroud of darkness.
