The penultimate volume of Zipang sees the crew from the future facing their biggest challenge yet as a squadron of forty US war planes attack the Mirai and the Mirai’s fellow Japanese even turn against them.
This very tense volume of the riveting war drama has the Mirai face overwhelming odds as the US attacks from the air. The Mirai’s goal upon finding themselves inexplicably thrown into the past of WWII has been to protect all life, Japanese and American. They wanted to reduce the casualties of the war, not change the future. But now, they have no choice but to fight in all earnestness or else be destroyed. Even worse, the Japanese Imperial Forces have turned on them, some wanting to covet the Mirai’s weapons, while other want to destroy it completely. With their own nation turned against them, they no longer have allies. Their goal must change from one to protect life, to one of sheer survival. The personal drama has not taken a back burner in all the political maneuverings and wartime battles. Far from it. Komatsu is still separated from the Mirai and is obsessed with finding the man who betrayed him – Kusaka. Also he has become aware of Taki’s interference and is disgusted by the lack of honor shown by his fellow Japanese. With this being the penultimate volume, his confrontation with the man he rescued and who in turn betrayed him, is imminent. This volume holds some exceptional mechanical designs and thrilling battle sequences. This is seen particularly in the air strike against the Mirai from the American forces. Although the CG can be a touch heavy in its attempt to blend with the 2D animation, the outstanding details in the ships and air crafts are wonderful, and the movements of the planes is fantastic, adding to the excitement and danger of the battle. EXTRAS: Bonus features include Geneon previews and opening and closing animation with English credit translations. IN SUMMARY: It’s one ship from the future against forty air planes in the riveting penultimate volume of Zipang. With their fellow Japanese against them, the Mirai must face enemies on all sides. Zipang is a fascinating blend of political intrigue, wartime drama and tense action.
