Battles, deception, and a war orchestrated by one man's own desire to see the beast within Hakouro hits hard in this third volume of Utawarerumono.
Niwe's army latest attack hits too close to home, and the worse takes place and devastates everyone's heart. Although they won the battle against the same forces that devastated the village of Yumayura, friends are lost and an entire village is gone. The alliance to fend off Niwe is all but gone due to the latest incursion and the attack continues to mount. Hakuoro is forced to go on the offensive, but he encounters King Orikakan, who calls him "Rakshain" and accuses him of a demented crime he committed in the past. While the unrest and bloodshed continues, Hakuoro once again starts to wonder about his past. To make matter worse, Touka, an Evankulga, a race of skilled warriors that fights for justice, makes it hard for his army to defeat their new enemy. Furthermore, feelings of turmoil are spreading across the country when the people find out that an Evankulga has sided with the enemy and question if Hakouro is evil. Almost to a breaking point about his past, Elullu who believes in him emotionally rescues Hakouro, as she has become a constant reminder of who he is now. However, determined to find out who Rakshain is, Hakouro manages to lure Orikakan out into the open in their next battle, but the past somewhat catches up with Hakouro, and ends with King Orikakan's death in the hands of Niwe, a deceitful death that is witnessed by Touka. As the relentless emperor continues his attacks, Hakouro's army reaches its limit. As everything starts to look bleak, Touka returns to lend her assistance to Hakouro. However, the country is still on the verge of collapse. Hakouro must now face Niwe and has gathered a small elite force against the emperor, while their adversary is mounting its own full-scale attack against their country. As the battle rages on in this third volume, the focus of the stories heads back to Hakuoro's lost memories. However, unlike the first time the series tackles his missing memories, Hakuoro's memories became a target of a deranged leader, hoping to provoke him and reveal his true nature. The battle scenes are more intense as more blood and dismemberments that are even more graphic are shown in this volume, but as always, cheerful and emotional scenes are as intense as the battles. However, the best scenes in the show, in my opinion, are when Elullu is trying to calm Hakouro with his past. A scene that is so emotional, touching, and seems too real for a fantasy show, thanks in part to the talented acting of John Gremillion and Kira Vincent-Davis that makes it believable. EXTRAS: The Omake Theater returns, and with all of the intense scenes in this four episode DVD, it is a welcome treat to watch something lighthearted and funny, as Hakouro and Elullu are over seeing a game of hide and seek between Aruru and Camus. Extended Episode previous, Character Art Gallery, Glossary of Terms, and the usual ADV Previews and DVD Credits rounds up this part of the disc. IN SUMMARY: The violence that comes with the forgotten past makes this the most violent volume in the series. Yet, the devastation makes this series more captivating. Utawarerumono shines on top as one of the most intense fantasy series ever created.
