Be careful what you wish for takes on a whole new meaning in Make 5 Wishes. To recap for you if you missed the first book:  Hana is an anti-social girl who makes up fake internet personas to interact with school friends online, then visits an unusual website and gets a cute, but lately very creepy, little demon to make her wishes come true. She wishes and then it all goes to hell. In this final volume you find out just how wrong it all goes.

An original English manga-esque story, what starts out like an After School Special, quickly turns into a horrific story as Hana’s life and her choices turn uglier with every moment. Some of the people die, at times they suffer horrible deaths. The methods that the demon makes Hana’s wishes come true are horrifying. The outcome is even more frightful. Much more than a cautionary tale about antisocial behavior and irresponsible choices, the story leaves a bitter ending and a lot of questions unanswered. The last might frustrate some readers who will want to know where the demon came from and what it truly is. The story even leaves the ending up to interpretation and stands out for its impact.

It’s not quite manga and not quite American looking so you get this very unique drawing style to look at. Creative and in full color, it is intriguing to look at with its blend of horror and a cute but ultimately frightful demon. The book also has extras like an afterwords and original sketches.

IN SUMMARY:
Make 5 Wishes is a horror that will leave you wondering. While that might frustrate some readers, others will enjoy this almost Twighlight Zone foray into the life of one antisocial high school girl.
