Active Anime interviews Satoru Kannagi, respected and well-known author of the wildly popular yaoi novel series Only the Ring Finger Knows, the manga it inspired, and the manga series Rin! All of which have been released in the US by Digital Manga Publishing.
ACTIVE ANIME: Welcome Satoru Kannagi, and thank you for speaking with us today. Can you please tell your readers here in North America a little about yourself?
Satoru Kannagi: I live with two cats and one husband. I love them dearly.
ACTIVE ANIME: Have you always wanted to write yaoi?
Satoru Kannagi: I wasn’t thinking about that particularly. I was just doing what I love. I love writing fantasy stories.
ACTIVE ANIME: How did you get started in yaoi?
Satoru Kannagi: My friend and I stared making Doujinshi, and one publisher picked it up and recruited me as potential yaoi writer. ACTIVE ANIME: What did you do before writing Only the Ringer Knows?
Satoru Kannagi: I have been writing yaoi more than ten years. I published about 30 to 40 books before Only the Ring Finger Knows. ACTIVE ANIME: How did it feel seeing your novels as a manga?
Satoru Kannagi: I was so happy. It was so nice to see my story and characters in pictures. Honami Yukine, and Hotaru Odagiri did such a great job. ACTIVE ANIME: Your work is known for its beautifully rendered romantic style. What inspires you in your writing?
Satoru Kannagi: I like listening to music and watching movies. When I feel special about something, I like to create a story by adding my imagination. ACTIVE ANIME: What do you find the hardest part of doing yaoi? What do you find the most enjoyable?
Satoru Kannagi: The most difficult thing is to create natural situation when two boys fall in love. I try my best to keep the romance believable, but since it’s between two boys, situation is very difficult.
I enjoy receiving letters or emails from my fans. I feel so special when people say they enjoyed my book, or my story gave a positive thought to someone. ACTIVE ANIME: You’ve mentioned in your books the undertaking of taking care of gold fish. Do you still have pet fish now?
Satoru Kannagi: Unfortunately, I don’t have the gold fish anymore. I have two cats and one husband instead. ACTIVE ANIME: As a bit of fun to let the readers know you a bit better, can you please share with us what the last movie you saw was? And what is your favorite TV show currently if any? What music do you enjoy listening to?
Satoru Kannagi: As for movie, I just watched Hannibal Rising. My favorite music is Bossa Nova. ACTIVE ANIME: What current projects are you working on that you can share with us?
Satoru Kannagi: I am working on few different projects. One is action (Hong Kong mafia and Japanese business man), and another one is kind of historical (around Meiji era) story. ACTIVE ANIME: Are there any future projects in the works that you can tell us about?
Satoru Kannagi: Besides historical and action, I want to challenge different genre. If it’s possible, I like to try mystery or horror story. ACTIVE ANIME: Finally, do you have any final words for your fans here in North America?
