An anthology of four unforgettable yaoi stories, this is one of the more diverse collections of young men in love with each other. They run the gamut of drama, comedy, tragedy and even supernatural horror. The first and longest story shares the title of the book. Ayumu, a young man with a painful past filled with abuse and prostitution, discovers his gentle and sweet twin brother died in a car accident. Taking the place of the brother he thought spoiled and privileged, Ayumu goes to school and acts just like his dead brother, all sweet and kind. When one of the students, the handsome Kirishima, sees Ayumu as he truly is, Ayumu doesn’t know what to do. He tries to hide behind gentle smiles and kind words but Kirishima always seems to bring out Ayumu’s true self. What will Ayumu discover about himself, his brother and what his heart truly longs for?

This is a riveting dramatic story with heady poignancy. But if something lighter is your preference, the second story, Snow White in Summer, is a humorous tale about two childhood friends reunited with a shock to one and a secret held by the other. It is lively and fun and has some laugh out loud moments. By contrast, the two last stories border on suspense, with the final one being a supernatural horror. First is the story about a man visiting the house where an admired artist had passed away. The scent of Midnight is an alluring tale of hopes, dreams, secrets and nightmares. The man’s visit to the home of a reclusive artist uncovers a disturbing secret and his own hidden desires.

In The Abyss Pool a widower tries to isolate himself by moving into a reclusive home that holds tales of a dragon spirit who devours the souls of men. This horror story is both evocative with its supernatural, almost Gothic atmosphere, and gripping with its superb storytelling. In fact, each of the stories is exceedingly well told. Each story is compelling, holding its own allure. The more mature subject matter in some of them, such as abuse, murder and hungry ghosts, make the read that much more involving.

The varied themes are each accentuated with a beautiful art style, well textured and detailed. The young men are beautiful, the atmosphere the images portrayed are deliciously provocative at times, disturbing at others, and poignant when needed most.

IN SUMMARY:
Othello is a treasure. The manga is a diverse anthology offering erotic stories that range from gut wrenching drama to supernatural horror.
