For everyone who wished for an inclusive anime compendium that contained a large majority of the anime from Japan, here it is. The Anime Encyclopedia is a comprehensive collection of a large number of anime from TV series, to OVA, specials and movies that have been produced in Japan since 1917. This expanded edition has titles as recent as 2005 such as Noein, Shakugan no Shana and Mushishi. It even contains titles as recent as 2006 including Kashimashi, Ergo Proxy and more.

This thorough tome of anime is naturally formatted in the manner of most encyclopedias such as alphabetically by title. In consideration of the unique subject, it also includes thematic entries such a Censorship and Localization, Ratings and Box Office, Voice Acting, and other more generalized themes including Comedy, Erotica, Documentaries and History, Horror and Monsters, and more. It even includes Foreign Influences.

The updated encyclopedia does not only contain more recent anime titles, but also overlooked ones from previous years and the authors have added updated information under the titles to include more recent details such as more current Western release information and numerous all new reviews. It sports many black and white photos of anime series. The entries themselves contain a list of information about the title such as the year of its release, the type of title it is (i.e. TV or movie), a list of the main Japanese crew such as director, music, character designer, screenwriter and more. Entries also include the length and number of episodes (if applicable i.e. for movies only the length would be given as it would not be broken into a number of episodes). This list is followed by a concise but comprehensive description of the anime title that often includes pertinent references.

Whether you’re interest in the Japanese animation genre known as anime is for your own personal entertainment and interest or your interest is of a more academic and media bent, this book is a thorough collection of the anime that has spanned Japan throughout the decades. It is a weighty slice of media and cultural history that can be enjoyed on many levels.

IN SUMMARY:
The new revised and expanded edition of The Anime Encyclopedia is a wonderfully comprehensive and robust collection of the numerous anime that have spanned the decades. Including more recent titles and update information, it is a must have for anime fans and people interested in the genre.
