In this intriguing tale of love in difficult times, Koby Brook is a young male who studies to become a priest living in German occupied Poland. He has memories of the rectory he lived and studied in before the war. Later it is closed, and the ones who lived there, including him were made homeless during the occupation. Koby, as a result of this gets adopted by a local family where he continues his studies and lives from day to day under the shadow of oppression. Koby later attends school where he is bullied by the other pupils who mock him for wanting to be a priest.
Despite their cruel jibes and the nasty way they trouble people in the area, he tries to prevent these awful events when he can, becoming an unlikely hero among the community and adopting a cat from one young victim. Though everyday life for him is a mixture of positive and negative, it is at night when Koby sleeps he dreams of being taken roughly by Oskar Keplar, a Hitler youth male who is wanting to be a successful German officer, and attends the same school. He desires this male so much he daydreams of him bursting into his room and deflowering him. He incurs the wrath of Oskar one night when he disturbs a woman being initiated into the Jugen, which he mistakes the sight of in the darkness as a rape attempt by Irvine, one of the boys Oskar associates with. Ever since this happened and he managed to intervene as an act of protecting her, Oskar vows to get his revenge telling him he will have his way with him. Tina Anderson, Author of In Motion as part of a short story anthology; When Worlds Collide, enlightens the reader in this theme of love and hate that runs through the story, and how it consumes the young soon to be priest alone in his bed at night, fumbling while thinking of Oskar. Through this story, it is easy to see both sides of the characters and their lives when they are so well written. Caroline Monaco who created the artwork makes it crisp and gives it a Noir feel that shows perfectly the harshness of the times. The sex scenes are sensual and creative so as to leave a lot to the reader's imagination. There are elements of humour in this rather dark, haunting tale, provided by Tobys' adopted cat. This was an enjoyable read, the time period was well researched and throughout it the reader feels pulled into the story. IN SUMMARY: Only Words is a dark tale of fleeting love in a difficult era and how short lived their romance seems during the war.
