REVIEW: The final fights, the last gasps, and big bangs comprise the latest collection of Yu Yu Hakusho. Essentially a fighting anime, there’s one match after another as Yusuke and his friends literally fight for their lives in the final rounds of the Dark Tournament. And not everyone will make it out alive! This latest compilation of the next fourteen episodes of the hit anime does see the end of the Dark Tournament but not before a lot of action packed and often bloody matches. Kurama’s match comes to a close with a shocking verdict. Then when Kuwabara faces off against elder Toguro, blood is spilled and he learns the awful truth about what happened to Genkai. Sakyo steps in before the final match and raises the stakes, putting his life on the line. It’s Toguro the younger and Yusuke face to face again. And considering the grudge carried by Yusuke, this match is the most personal and has the most riding on it. If Yusuke loses, not only will he have failed to avenge his master’s death, he and his friends will be trapped in the Netherworld. There’s a lot of drama attached to the action. Not only is there Genkai’s death to avenge, but before the final match reveals the one to survive, other friends of Yusuke’s may be lost forever. His match with Toguro reaches an epic scale as the fight lasts nearly four episodes. There are a number of strobe effects during the matches in general and they tend to be a lot bloodier than one might expect. When the match reaches its zenith, it’s not only the lives of the fighters at stake as the whole coliseum is threatened. One would think after surviving the Dark Tournament that Yusuke and the rest would get some downtime. Alas, no. They’re not even back to school for a day before Yusuke gets kidnapped and his friends receive an ominous note. They all end up at a classmate’s home and discover that some of their school chums have delved into the dark arts and want to test their mettle. Kurama, Hiei, Botan and Kuwabara have to face their all new opponents in the mansion of four dimensions. Needing their wits about them, traps are sprung and soon everyone is hoping Kurama can save them all. The biggest shock awaits the group when they discover who is behind this latest threat. Aside from the many battles and challenges, there’s also a poignant moment shared between Genkai and young Toguro. We at last learn the full extent of their shared past and Toguro’s true wish. This set of episodes sees the climatic conclusion to the Dark Tournament on one hand, and on the other, it begins the introduction of an all new menace (not the school mates) that is rising to threaten the Spirit Detectives. EXTRAS: Bonus features include clean opening and closing animation, FUNimation trailers, and character profiles. IN SUMMARY: Yu Yu Hakusho is packed with explosive action. This collection shows the exciting end to the Dark Tournament, a new threat, and some surprises for the Spirit Detectives. |
