This has been such an offbeat and enjoyable comedy it is sad to see it come to a close. The latest revelations about Take may have come too late as his condition worsens. And although Sana’s heart is big, this latest sorrow may be too much for even her great heart to bear. Can she recover that crazy love of life of hers that is so infectious? And just what does Akito have to say to her that he’s willing to risk life and limb and trek up a snow covered mountain to tell her? It all comes to a head in this final volume.

This volume sees the end of the elementary school saga. Sana deals with the revelations and aftermath involving Take and then has to face graduation and she and her friends prepare to go on to middle school (think of it as junior high). There is another fifty episodes involving the junior high arc, but at the time of this review, no word has been heard yet as to whether it will be released here in North American or not. I know Kodocha fans are hoping so.

Because this isn’t really the end of the series but a pivotal point before the story branches of into a new arc, this doesn’t necessarily tie up all loose ends. Nevertheless the series does manage to give a strong sense of closure with the Take storyline wrapped up, Akito’s confession certainly is interesting, and graduation happens. The only criticism is that the angst ridden Take story is wrapped up too quickly and easily. Sana gets over it all in only one episode. Even for vivacious Sana that seems a little too easy. But it does open the door for Akito to step in, step up and surprise Sana with what’s been on his mind for some time. It makes for a stellar romantic moment in this fun series.

EXTRAS:
This disc includes previews of other FUNimation titles and episode commentary English cast on the final episode by Laura Bailey (Sana) and Jerry Jewell (Akito).

IN SUMMARY:
Kodocha is an infectiously fun anime. It has some unparalleled comedy and an immensely likeable female protagonist. This final volume of the elementary school arc sees the Take story line wrapped up, Akito finally acting on his feelings, and Sana challenged by having to deal with more than she could possibly have imagined. Kodocha, like it’s main character, is irrepressible fun.
