From the back cover: “The Aura Road has been opened. As two unfamiliar worlds collide in a fog of war, the Wings of Rean call for the holy warrior. Thus begins an epic tale of fantasy and romance!”

Two whole decades after Aura Battler Dunbine, now legendary director Yoshiyuki Tomino returns to the land of Byston Well to bring us another story, this time with all the power and technology of anime being produced in this day and age. It doesn’t really matter if you’re an old fan of Aura Battler Dunbine or not – the visuals and intensity of the action are sure to please a lot of people that don’t know much about the original concept.

Aesap Suzuki is a normal boy with family ties to the US military stationed in Japan. Terrorists have attacked the US military base in Iwakuni City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. When it’s discovered that the culprits are two of Aesap Suzuki’s friends, Aesap is also mistakenly hunted by the Japanese police and US forces. As the innocent Aesap escapes arrest, he spots a flying warship suddenly emerging from the ocean. At the bow is a young woman with wings of light on her feet. Her name is Lyukus, daughter of King Sakomizu of Byston Well – a world located where land and sea meet (like another dimension, so to speak). Unwittingly drawn into the war of an unknown land, Aesap can only wonder what fate the future holds for him – and the world that he thought he knew.

The Wings of Rean at first glance is a little mind-blowing to say the least. Everything from the visuals to the story moves at a lightning fast pace and you’d better be able to keep up! This anime is high action for the entire first episode, but in no way is without story and character to back it up. Characters are introduced as fast as the missiles fly, but later episodes should provide them some more depth once the dust settles (if it settles!). It seems as though that all these things going on at once will soon come together to form a cohesive and understandable plot, it’s just difficult to take it all in at once. It’s exciting though!

The animation is top notch – more movement and dynamic action than you can shake a stick at. Lots of color and explosions too. The mechanical things in the anime have been some of the most interesting visuals so far – from giant flying warships from another dimension, to all of the US military vehicles and planes. The music is pretty good too – every piece adds to the intensity of the action making it feel whole as the production works together as a group. All in all, it’s wonderfully overwhelming – a good beginning to a hopefully epic and action filled series.

EXTRAS:
Textless ending, promotional trailer, cross talk with director Tomino and Anna Tsuchiya.

IN SUMMARY:
The Wings of Rean wants to go somewhere beyond where most shows coming out today want to go. You can really feel the production strive to be as intense and entertaining as possible and it very much manages it!
