So what now? Where do we go? I don't know what to do. - Kurau
Struggling and on the run, Kurau and Christmas must turn to an unlikely ally to dodge and prevent their capture by GPO, while Ayaka's buried past is revealed in the second volume of Kurau Phantom Memory. As the series progresses, Kurau realizes that she has become some kind of a portal between the two worlds after confronting the same pod that was inhabited by a Rynax from her previous assignment. While wondering where all of this mystery is heading, she takes a delivery assignment from her current employer. Though it seems that it is a routine job, nothing about the assignment is routine, as the GPO is right after her tail and have sprung a trap to capture her. However, the encounter surprises Wong and Ayaka, as they grasp that Kurau is not an ordinary Ryna-Sapien. At the same time, Doug, the agent that's been watching them from afar, befriends Christmas and offers his assistance to the both of them. Now lying low while working in a family-owned restaurant at a nearby island, Kurau and Christmas are finding a new life with the help of Doug, but their life will soon be interrupted as GPO catch up with their tracks. The second volume of the series is a giant leap from the first volume, while the first volume establishes the plot of the series, the second volume pushed forward and starts up the Kurau-shrouded mystery and the potential abilities of Christmas. In contrast, Ayaka Steiger's dark past is visited in the final episode, showing a connection to Christmas that might indeed play out in future episodes. The action is a-plenty, and so are the laughs in the lively relationship between Kurau and Christmas that continues to work and play well in the series. As for Christmas, it has been a while since I have such an adorable, vibrant and naïve character, who is brilliantly performed by the talented Jessica Boone. EXTRAS: The extras comes with "Key Words" which explain some of the terms and acronyms that are used in the series, five-minute plus production art works accompanied by the show's wonderful musical tracks, and the Japanese TV Spots. The usual Clean Opening and Closing animation, DVD Credits, and ADV Previews are included in the Extra. The DVD also contains a preview of Volume 3. IN SUMMARY: Kurau Phantom Memory forges on with thickening plots and mysteries, making it a well-deserved dramatic sci-fi animated series.
