It’s one last kick at the can for Papuwa. Shintaro drops in to get his little bro Rotaro (aka Kotaro) back. He loves the little dude, Papuwa used to be his friend, and heck, he’s as crazy as the rest of the island’s inhabitants. So why can’t they all just get along? It might be because if he triggers Kotaro’s memories to return, Kotaro will become a doomsday weapon again and destroy this island too! Plus there’s the army coming back to the island, a wormhole that will close soon, and Liquid a man-maid no more?! It’s the beginning of the end for Papuwa the anime!

The first episode plays off great. It’s the usual queer frolics and zany mayhem Papuwa is all about. But then the show does something really weird, it tries to put in a plot. Anyone who’s watched Papuwa knows this anime is all about the fun, screw the plot. But the show gets downright maudlin in the last couple of episodes. Not many laughs, maybe a couple of cute little heart string tugging moments, but that’s not what this anime has been all about. It was okay, just not the usual weird fun the anime made me expect more of.

When Kotaro awakens and his lost memories come back, the melodrama comes across like a two-by-four. Thank all that’s fun that the show doesn’t completely give up on the comedy. There are still the loveable and weird characters popping in and out of the story to keep some of those laughs going. But it’s all going, going gone because this is the last volume. It makes me want to cry like that manly man-maid Liquid!

EXTRAS:
Extras on the DVD include clean opening and closing, character art gallery, ADV trailers and translator notes.

IN SUMMARY:

Papuwa ends just as crazy as it began. It has a little lull with some plot in the last volume, but there’s still plenty of laughs and weirdness to play with.
