All in all, GAOGAIGAR has a lot of the old goodness that makes a giant robot show what it is, but has no lack of it’s own new additions to make it stand out from the crowd. An interesting mix relies more heavily on straight up action without complex character backgrounds and such. It’s worth a look, especially for a younger crowd looking to get into a more interesting anime than what you’ve been watching on TV. It’s a good “starter” giant robot series – it would have any kid’s eyes glued to the screen for hours. It’s total eye-candy – dynamic and explosive through and through.
This volume continues to present the show with a fast-paced action focus. There is always something happening and it’s always filled with high energy and/or high drama of a giant robot kind. New characters constantly appear, as well as new robotic creations and tools. There’s always something new to follow or see – the only repetition are in some of the transformation sequences, but those are all so dynamic and well done that they’re no pain to watch. GAOGAIGAR is like Transformers on speed – that would be a good comparison if one needed to be made! In volume five, the action continues when the brilliant Professor Akiko Hirata develops a Gravity Control System and the Zonders subsequently take control of it. To stop them and their plans for using it, Gai must be mobilized with the infamous Goldion Hammer. But the Hammer is so powerful, that just wielding it is enough to destroy GAOGAIGAR. In response, GGG creates a whole new AI robot with invulnerable armour, Goldymarg. Booted up with Hyuma’s personality as a template, he’s just as heroic as the Major is and just as likely to ignore his orders and do whatever he wants. There’s nothing like a robot who’s been given the attitudes and personality of a steadfast human! But what is Goldymarg’s secret transformation that will let GAOGAIGAR use the Goldion Hammer? GAOGAIGAR and Goldymarg must join together and work as a team to allow for the use of the Goldion Hammer and ensure that GAIGAOGAR will be able to fight yet again another day. While this is all going on in Japan, Gai’s uncle Liger in the United States is preparing the ultimate weapon and a new breed of AI robots! Surely these new additions will join in on the battle for the next upcoming volume. EXTRAS: The disc extras include an image gallery.
IN SUMMARY: GAOGAIGAR is fast moving, entertaining, and thankfully stays away from being laughable or too campy. It’s a good giant robot show with a lot going on visually and action wise, and will likely appeal much more to a younger audience of children and early teens.
