From the creator of The Demon Ororon comes a tale of Japanese gods descending on humankind, producing special offspring called Kuruizaki No Hana, or flowers out of season, who bare supernatural powers of their own. Demons, not wanting their kind around seek out and dispose of the Kuruizaki No Hana using their own as assassins.
When Ushitora finds a Kuruizaki child he must destroy. As Ushitora ends the little one's life, he wonders and discovers another child who is looking for his sister. When he sees her there on the floor, he as no idea Ushitora has just killed her with his own hands. When he asks the child's name, he tells him he is four-year old Masato Hiradai-Ra, and thinks he can no longer kill these children and makes a decision to leave the family and go on the run, making his own life with Masato, and a young orphan girl called Nao. All living together, their time is fun until one day the family goes out and Masato encounters something horrible among the grass. Demon Flowers is more than just a story of an intense family bond. There is the love between Ushitara and Masato that has spanned since he got more of age to understand his feelings for him. Ushitara though is torn with the emotions inside him of the night he killed Masato's sister. He wants to come clean and admit it was he to Masato, thinking he would be absolved of his crime so long ago, but he re thinks in his mind and does not reveal anything. The reader will be amused at certain points of this manga. Masato's attempts to pick flowers lead to calamity and the truth that Ushitara is better at cooking, chess, cross dressing than Masato, all except playing the piano will have them in stitches! Although there is a horror element in this, it is not too strong as the humour tends to dampen the mild gore and peril down suitably. One of the interesting parts of this first volume is Masato's special powers as a Kunizaki No Hana, to heal wounded animals and repair broken glass. As characters, Ushitora is the headstrong one who keeps the unit together and happy, he is quick-witted, protective of the other two and has a quirky air about him, while Masako is much cuter indulging in his favourite pass-time being with Ushitora. The manga explains a great deal of Masato's past when he was four and onward, making it more of a full story. This manga like The Demon Ororon has its own distinctive style of minimalism and almost abstract illustrations. The unique style and story go together marvellously. IN SUMMARY: Demon Flowers is delightful. Original art style plus clever writing make this a must read for manga lovers everywhere.
