In a dangerous future of dark times and evil rising up to usurp the order of the Vatican, Sister Esther's life collides with that of newly sent from the Vatican's State Special Service, Father Abel Nightroad who is welcomed along with Esther by Mother Laura Vitez who has been expecting his arrival to the city of Istavan, one that crawls with the cruel threat of the Methuselah, the local vampires.
Assigned to work together, Abel and Esther stay at Mother Laura's request until they stumble upon a slaughter in their chapel, and one lone vampire Methuselah Lord Gyula turns on him while others lie dead at his feet. Not the sort of priest to turn down a fight, Father Nightroad transforms into another, more powerful being Gyula knows is a Krusnik. Cringing in fear he sees how powerful Abel is, but not before Gyula leaves the scene to cause havoc elsewhere in Istavan. Lord Gyula, incensed at his wife being killed due to her husband being a vampire intends to wreak havok using a weapon called the Star of Sorrow to destroy the Terrans who caused his wife's death as a punishment. Can Abel and Esther prevent annihilate in time, or will his arrival be too late for the Terrans of Istavan? Sunao Yoshida provides enough insight into the characters by having Father Nightroad and Esther bump into each other while they get to know their traits and foibles. The characters of Lord Gyula and his vampire subordinates show their cruelty and sense of gothic extravagance under the cover of darkness. Sunao proves in his story that there are two different types of vampire, who are at war constantly. The Methuselah and Kruznik both have intense powers and the need to be dominant, though Abel's need is more for the good of the Terran public who live in constant fear of the Methuselah who roam terrorising the city. The art inside is what makes Kiyo Kyujyo a brilliant manga artist who has taken the original character designs created by Thores Shibamoto and brought them to life in the numerous scenarios in this first novel which will hold the attention of the reader greatly brings plenty of gothic action into this tremendously fiery manga. Kiyo give a lot in this volume. There is great detail and attention to it in this particular piece, and the quality of the art really shows through.
