In order to try and save their cousin, Mio, Ren and Rai make a deal with a demon to sell their souls, but Diabolo has other ideas. The demon gives the two boys separate powers, Ren's is ultimate offense and Rai's is ultimate defense.
Chiaki learns from the girls in her class about a murder that happened in their town. Two seven-year old boys had reputedly killed a young girl, and the body was never found. The two boys managed to get off on a technicality and moved not long after, no one knows where they are. Chiaki is unsettled to hear about such a murder and walks home to her apartment uneasy, passing many strange people animals and remembering about her parents paying so much for her staying there, yet she loathes living there due to all the wierd people who live around them. As she walks up the stairs, she falls feeling faint when she faces two young boys offering her help only to disappear moments later. Confused, Chiaki hears more at school the next day about the murder of the girl, and they tell her the condo that she lives in now was built over the lot where it is believed the murder happened. When Chiaki next goes home after her classes have finished, she witnesses all manner of surreal things, not understanding half of them until she comes into contact with the two boys again just in time as something diabolical is about to happen to her. Diabolo is definately worth the horror rating it has been given. Blood and gore, a demon on the loose, with only two people to stand in the way as good against evil. Chiaki is the teenager who has to come to terms with who she really is later on in the novel, and how she is affected by what she has seen. This as a manga in its first volume is a series of stories that surround Ren and Rai who act as the only constant characters throughout the manga. It is well worth reading as it has the spiritual and action elements within the story which are part of the characters as well. The art is well drawn and conveys the eeriness needed for readers to become immersed in the story as it follows along. IN SUMMARY:
Excellently crafted, supernatural, devilish in every way! Ren and Rei will lead readers into their world of lost souls and demonology.
