Out in distant space, Cobra the only one to have escaped the wrath of the Mafia Guild meets Jane, a female Bounty Hunter who strangely enough is seeking the one called Cobra, the most famous man alive, so when she meets him and he says he is the real Cobra she does not believe him until she sees him in action using his gun. A legend in his own lifetime, the only one who stood against the Mafia and escaped, but at a price – the Guild now has a one million bounty on his head for the one who captures him.
Jane though is not just happy at coming face to face with her dream man, she wants him to do something important for her. As she is one of three sisters, she has it in her mind to get him to find her sister Dominique who is being kept by Crystal Boy, the Mafia Guild's dangerous and strangely camp leader. Armed with his Psycho gun, Cobra helps her out, finding himself involved with two other women – and if that is not enough, there is more besides.
It is not hard to see what has been the inspiration for this movie, the sixties theme of drug-implied imagery in the form of loudly coloured Art Nouveau animation in the introduction. It will remind viewers of the films Barbarella, Zardoz and Star Wars all mixed together. It is also the sort of animation that looks like it is straight out of an edition of Heavy Metal magazine – and that will be a real attention grabber for those who enjoy watching retro anime that capture that original feel while containing the inspiration of other outside influences.
For those who like Ulysses 31 and Battle of the Planets as well – it will be one to watch. One of the nicest parts of the introduction was the theme song Daydream Romance written by Shigeru Matuzaki and sung by Eve, that melts into the animation perfectly. Space Adventure Cobra is based on the comic books by Buichi Terasawa, and also from the animators who brought fans Astro Boy, Lupin the Third and Golgo 13. This is Manga Entertainment's first release in the UK of this anime and is well worth watching.
EXTRAS: A trailer for Highlander: The Search for Vengeance, Castle of Cagliostro and Lupin the Third.
IN SUMMARY: A trippy, unforgettable psychedelic space opera – all laser guns, killer curves, spaceships and tight spandex. Utterly superb!
