SYNOPSIS: Bright kid Ichigo Kurosaki has since he was young been able to see the spirits of the deceased, but when he comes face to face with an attacking hollow, he tries to protect a woman he does not know from the threat, but finds himself at first powerless until the woman known as Rukia gives him part of his power to fend the thing off. Little does he know that this is the beginning of a life long struggle against hollows. While Rukia is in her gigai (artificial human body) Ichigo has to take on her role as Soul Reaper in order for her to continue her work through him. After this happens, Rukia ends up in his class at school as a transfer student, and he sees her as a normal girl, but she hides herself from the others, and is actually watching over Ichigo while he does his work as a substitute Soul Reaper. Contains episodes 1-20 on 5 DVDs. Have a look at the EXTRAS section for the full list of bonus material.
REVIEW: Though the series starts with Ichigo coming across Rukia, other than his normal school friends, Orihime, Chad, Tatsuki and Chizuru, he finds he is not as alone as he first thought. And as they do not know about his strange double life, he discovers how different they turn out to be later in the discs, some such as Orihime and Chad discovering their own special powers as they are in contact with Ichigo. The Soul Reaper is known as a shinigami (death god) and as such, have the power to create a balance by protecting the human world from the threat of hollows and other spirits of great malice. Originally from the Soul Society, they are trained from being young in the Soul Reaper world as an excellent fighting force.
Ichigo does have a rival though, a young school boy called Uryu Ishida, a Quincy archer, the last of his race or so it is believed who bears a grudge against Ichigo as he realises he is a Soul Reaper as the story advances, setting him a challenge that could alter the balance of the human and spirit world forever. The humour is ever increasing in this series, and many will find Uryu to be comfortably funny, not just in his ability as a Quincy, but with the sewing needle for handy-crafts he enjoys, much to the amusement of Ichigo. Orihime's nice nature and airhead personality are nothing compared to her newfound powers inside her two hairpins. While Chad Sado's power comes from his arm, and later he can shoot powerful energy blasts from his modified armoured arm. The cast of voice actors is an amazing one, and what is interesting is what these people have done in their careers. Derek Stephen Prince, the voice of Uryu also has a list a mile long of his voiced characters like, Shino Aburame in Naruto, and Cowboy Bebop as Lin, while Johnny Yong Bosch who voices Ichigo had parts in Naruto as Genma Shiranui, and Ghost in the Shell SAC as JD from episode 9. There is enough entertainment in here to keep the Bleach fan watching for hours. The story is never stale, and there is always humour to be found in this series though a great deal of it revolves around death and the mystery surrounding it.
