"So long as I have my sword to fight with - I am sure to survive" - Guts.

In the heat of battle, Guts holds his own, slicing into the opposition while Caska is trapped by the ememy, laid on the floor and powerless to protect herself.

Guts, while fighting the last fifty enemy troops has thought of why he is there and who he really is fighting for. He has come so far and has seen so much destruction and bloodshed on the battlefield he now wonders if it is all in vain.

Caska, Judeau and their troops are advised to make it back in time for Guts as he stepped in so Caska could escape. He needs their help and in her view is outnumbered by them. When they reach the forest grounds, all they see around them are numerous dead bodies of the fallen.

They all look on as Caska finds Guts sat against a tree, exhausted from all the fighting. Once they get him back and his wounds stitched and bandaged, he rests, but he has a great deal to tell Caska as he thinks she and Griffith have plenty to fight for and it is a worthy cause for them, Guts on the other hand feels worthless even though he is great in battle.

Rage and emotions flare in this fourth volume. The armies of Chuder and Midland have warred for over one hundred years, and the Band of the Hawk seek to defeat the Purple Rhino Knights, the undefeated army under the control of General Boscogn of the Chuder.

When the viewer had already thought he had seen the darkest three volumes to date, they will see this fourth one and be amazed at the sheer terror it holds as Caska is caught in a horrid situation, while Guts has to hack his way through a hundred warriors, frustrated, angry and not feeling a part of Griffith's grand design for the future.

Most viewers will realise that as they watch on, it is the Band of the Hawk who do all the work, while Griffith takes all the wealth and credit for their actions. It will not be long before Guts realises this fully and has to make a decision that will affect the Band of the Hawk forever.

Guts' doubts, it seems are unfounded for the moment, yet he does have the idea Griffith wants to do more than just take over the Chuder.

The Band of the Hawk already know his desire for the princess and only time will tell when he will reach his goal of becoming king.

Devil's Advocate is one of the most thought provoking and bloody of the entire four volumes as the Band of the Hawk are hellbent on conquering so much they are starting to forget what it is they are fighting for. If they looked more closely, they would know they are fighting only for Griffith as they look up to him as their leader, yet he is a sinister Captain who will use the men to his own ends.

This has to be the best volume so far and fans will certainly be itching to see the fifth volume after seeing this.

EXTRAS:
Interview with Kentaro Miura, Production Sketches and the usual extremely funny outtakes make this a complete volume of enjoyment.

IN SUMMARY:
Dangerous, bloodthirsty - Guts is unmatched - what a series of outstanding episodes.
