Rokuro Okajima, University graduate and new office worker lives his life from day to day without any excitement or anything to look forward to . He gets abuse constantly from his superiors in the company, and he feels like he is a nothing person in a businessman's world of corporate fat cats and money.
Rokuro is ambitious though, as he hopes to ascend the ladder of success in the corporation and wants to be the big boss himself one day even though he realises it will be a hard struggle. Out in the South China Sea, on a boat Rokuro is given the opportunity to prove he can do a worthwhile job carrying a CD of data from his company, Asahe Industry. He thinks he has got it made, the sea and sun and relaxation until Dutch, the head of a crew of pirates infiltrates his boat and crew, he is in search of the disc and decides to take Rokuro as a hostage. Rokuro sees he has found the disc after having the hell beaten out of him in the process, while the others in the crew are set free, Dutch is told there is a patrol boat from the Filipino Navy in sight, so they decide to flee to their own boat. Just when Rokuro thinks he is free, he is taken at gun-point by Revy, and he becomes a new hostage. Dutch contacts Balalaika, head of the Russian Crime Syndicate, Hotel Moscow, and tells her the disc has been acquired, and the trade off will start. Once Asahi Industry discover their disc is missing, and they are being blackmailed in order to retrieve it, they feel powerless to do anything, while their sister company sends out Kagiya to sort everything out discreetly for them. Meanwhile Dutch is unhappy with Revy's choice of bringing a hostage along with them. When she explains that they were practically getting peanuts for this "job" then it would not hurt to take a hostage and get more cash for his ransom. Soon in this first volume of Black Lagoon, Rokuro finds that Asahi Industry are not interested in the fact he has been kidnapped and held to ransom, but more concerned with their missing disc. Rokuro makes his mind up to join with Dutch and his gang, becoming Rock, a valued member who helps them out each episode, making this an anime that is geared more toward and adult audience with its intense action, graphic violence, powerful script and spot on characters. The viewers will find this is a very important anime to come out recently as it breaks the barriers of just pure animation enjoyment and takes its place as an actual animated action film - which will be considered the first of its kind. From the introduction the viewer will get a great sense of atmosphere, and presence from the characters who each have their own separate and distinctive personalities as the episodes go on. Generally, the episodes are fast moving and generous with how the animation plays out. The characters are full and interesting with their own no nonsense manner about others, while the quality is wonderfully sharp and will have the viewer hooked from the beginning. This particular anime is for those discerning adults who enjoy a great deal of action and punchy dialogue in their series. EXTRAS:
