Guts scales the roof, and watches over a courtyard below where a man and a boy are sword fighting. As the boy falls to the ground, his sword hacked from him, he tells of how Adnis will soon be a great warrior, marry Charlotte and be ruler of Midland when he, the king is gone. This, of course has been a burden on the king for a good while now as the prince is not good at combat, though he has tried many times. His father believes he is a son of royalty and being a warrior like him is his destiny whether he likes it or not.

At court and in such great splendour, Lord Griffith is reminded of how brave he was at the hunt, helping them out and saving Charlotte whom they all think is very beautiful. Griffith has his eyes on her and finds her as attractive as they.

When Guts enters the castle, he does something he only lives to regret, while Lord Griffith basks in his fake glory at the party with all the guests. Guts remembers his fight against Gambino when he was much younger and needing to get approval from an adult for his fighting skills. He is forever tormented by what he has done.

Griffith shows his megalomaniac side to Princess Charlotte who is wrapped in his words and charming manner. She sees him as a philosopher and a leader, but little does she know what he is really like underneath all his kind words and gentlemanly ways.

While Guts watches them both in the courtyard, he sees a different side to Griffith. A more dangerous and disturbing person who uses others as tools, and speaks of them as his subjects, but in his own words they are working with him to make his dream come true. As Guts hears him speak with the princess, he sees him for what he really is.

In this anime, Griffith gains a great upper hand on the rivals both in the court and out of it. The story sees many of the characters taken in by Griffith's quest for greatness, and it is now Guts who has the thought that all is not right with Griffith and his desire for power as it grows ever stronger.

As the pace quickens so does Guts's doubts of Lord Griffith through the whole series of episodes. This part of Guts grapples with his own conscience over his actions before is what actually drives him later on.

Caska as an observer of Griffith's time spent with the princess gives her feelings of envy toward her as she has a want of being with him in a relationship, but now she is starting to realise there has been a change in Griffith's attitude as she notices he has want of more power and material wealth. For this jealousy, Caska pays the price on the battlefield when she fails to fend off an attacker successfully.

There is more to learn of why Caska wanted to join the Band of the Hawk, and the viewer will find it intriguing as she tells her life story to Guts.

EXTRAS:
This volume comes along with sensational storyboards showing the animation in its rawest state, excellent production sketches that depict each individual character, outtakes that will have the viewer howling with laughter, original TV opening and text-less closing animation.

IN SUMMARY:
Unceasingly violent, the fight scenes are shocking and fierce – Guts and Caska are amazing.
