Yui and her brother are intruded upon by two men who tell them their father was in serious debt and now the burden of that debt falls to her brother Takeshi now that his father has long since died.

The sinister two decide to keep her brother there while his sister is sent away, much to his torment. Takeshi has been taken to a satanic cult where he is subjected to torture of a most horrible kind, and is later conscripted into a secret army for battle. When in the grip of this army, he is told they have been bought and are to be used to kill enemies. Takeshi has to learn to kill so he can survive the hell he is living in if he ever wants to see his sister again.

As every enemy Takeshi and the others kill earns them cash so this will be used to pay off his father's debt. Every waking moment he has is filled with the need to find his sister, but he knows it will be a long time before that reality will come true. Takeshi discovers they are all being used as mercenaries in the army to pay back what they owe to their debtors, and are being sent to dangerous places on missions most do not even come back from. In this particular mission they are to parachute over enemy lines and infiltrate a laboratory. Takeshi so far has survived seven years in this military unit and is one mission away from earning his freedom.

At the laboratory, they sneak in as quiet as possible under cover of darkness, but in communication they glean more than they ever intended in the building and it holds a real danger for them.

The focus suddenly shifts from Takeshi to Suitengu who intends on taking over an organisation to make it his own, and in the process make new acquaintances, but what else is Suitengu plotting?

This first volume clearly illustrates the true terrors of war. The deaths of women and children under fire, and the young males used to destroy who are innocent of the destruction they bring as it is no fault of their own they are in this predicament.

There will be a certain amount of surprise for the viewer at the content of this particular volume. Child exploitation on a major scale, the corruption of humanity and that every person can be bought and sold for a price.

Takeshi in his youth gives the idea he grows through all the horror he has endured from the beginning of the first episode and throws him into a personal situation later on. Takeshi inwardly fears from the start what has occurred in his life from the moment the two men enter his home and demand money from him, though he does all he can not to show it. He keeps his pain inside, and defies everyone around him still inwardly. His only thought that keeps him going is when he will see his sister, though the men around him think he may never get that chance unless some minor miracle would happen as the team have met with death before and it will only be so long before they will all die.

Takeshi’s pain and strength in this volume is interesting to watch and provides a refreshing shift from Suitengu’s meddling ways.

EXTRAS:
Saito documentary part 2, character cast auditions, a beautiful art gallery, text-less opening and closing animations and trailers for other animes.

IN SUMMARY:
An intriguing, original and unexpected fifth volume.
