Inevitability. A word that describes events that are more than coincidence yet different from fate. An occurrence that is inescapable awaits each of the clients that walk into Yuko’s shop. Each must pay a price for what they need to learn. Sometimes that truth is painful, always it is revealing, and the anime remains mesmerizing at every turn. First in this collection is the appearance of a woman who’s problem may seem similar to that of a previous client, but she hides a different secret. Pinky promises and lies aren’t the only concern about this woman’s agenda. The episode also marks the introduction of the pipe fox, a new and intriguing supernatural creature who might become essential to Watanuki’s well being in the future. Speaking of survival, how Watanuki keeps falling for Yuko’s teasing is a constant source of comedy as she baits him. This time she’s convinced him to go on a first date with Himawari. Something he is pleased to do, but not at a haunted temple! For first dates this one goes weird right from the start when they are joined by Yuko and Watanuki’s perceived rival, Domeki. A tale of ghost stories proves a bit too telling when an actual ghost appears and wreaks havoc with Watanuki. It may not be a romantic first date, it will definitely be a memorable one. For Odon, the festival honoring one’s ancestors proves to be trying when it looks like Domeki might be joining his ancestors if Watanuki can’t save him! The tables are turned in this episode marking the first time Watanuki has to save Domeki rather than the other way around. A flying girl, a protective spirit, and some special red beans make for a unique love confession. For the final episode on this volume, Yuko takes the trio for a trip to the beach to break up the monotony of the hot summer weather. It is a cute tale showing just how far Watanuki’s friends will go for him and just how dense Watanuki remains. The volume also has fascinating information on where pinky promises originated from as well as the tradition of the red bean paste eaten on Odon. I don’t know whether the information is fact or fiction but it is absorbing story telling details either way.
