Tokyo Majin gives you the sense of something “big” from the get go. This may very well be the next big thing. It has very high production values, both in depth of story and stunning animation – and takes steps to become a bigger, better demon hunting extravaganza than many of the popular series of that genre that are available at the moment. Mark these works: “Tokyo Majin will be huge.” The story of Tokyo Majin is wrought with mystery and just hints of information as it flows along. Not knowing everything all at once gives this series a fair amount of suspense, making it much more enjoyable. It’s easy to get wrapped up in a story that you really have to think about as a viewer. The basic idea, if we’re to put it into laments terms, is that five high school students from the Tokyo area get accidentally (or by fate) thrown into an ongoing battle with once human zombies and powerful demons (school safety tip #1: “Don’t let the zombies eat you”). So, corpses of the un-dead scour the city at the bidding of inhuman masters, seeking a power that will trigger the final apocalypse. Our five high school heroes must use their new found powers and a bit of bad attitude to fight through the back alleys of Japan – places that are about to become the site of the biggest supernatural rumble ever. All these kids know is that they must continue to fight and stick together. They are weak by themselves, but by combining all of their skills, they become a formidable fighting force. In volume three, things suddenly seem all too peaceful as the group waits for the enemy to strike again. With the decreased incidence of demon attacks in Tokyo, the city seems quiet... a little too quiet for the students of Tokyo Majin. They know evil still lurks in the shadows but they can't do anything until it rears its ugly head. What they don't know is that the reason for the attacks is to force out an ultimate supernatural power that's deep within one of them - a power that will raise the dead to the land of the living. Kozunu sets the stage so that he can acquire the power he needs to control the world so that he can have vengeance for past wrongs placed on him. The five brave students of Tokyo Majin will be engaged in the most vicious of attacks. One of them must endure a seduction of the heart and another must hold strong against a psychological attack for the control of their mind and soul. If they survive, they still have to battle against the unholy warriors of the dead. They're going to need help. Past allies will have to unify if they are to be victorious, because if they don't, the world will be engulfed by darkness and overrun by the dead in the thrilling third volume of Tokyo Majin! Yes, things are certainly getting very interesting. Tatsuma has a love interest in the form of a very nice girl… who might actually be dead. Aoi is experiencing some pretty intense mental pain from a source she is unsure of, but believe you me that her migraine might just end up being the apocalypse. The trouble she’s feeling behind her eye is in fact the cause of many people’s otherworldly troubles thus far. Aoi’s power is bringing misfortune to everyone she touches, and something horrible may need to happen to stop it from inside her… Again the animation pushes the boundaries with great effects and general proficiency with everything it does. There are some really great, really artistic slow motion sequences that bring out the drama in an otherwise not as dramatic situation. The angles, light effects, and shadows used within the animation are also pretty impressive and help to add more dimension and realism to the visuals. And as always, the good use of tones and color makes the show wonderfully surreal at those moments where it is so necessary. The animation is truly top notch throughout the whole series so far, and it’s highly unlikely that it would ever falter because the people behind this one really know what they are doing when it comes to producing top notch animation. It looks great in every sense, and it’s exciting to watch. Just as a side note, it gets its mature rating due to a fair amount of colorful language and just as much violence and a bit of blood. But that all totally makes sense – you’d be using some colorful language too if you were caught up in some of the zombie horde/demon crushing situations that these unfortunate high school kids get themselves into. The animation is flawless – a very visually appealing work. The story is suspenseful from the start, and the mysteries waiting to be unlocked would make anyone feel the need to see the next volume as soon as they can get their hands on it. This is a great action series with time and thought out into the characters to make it well rounded and very much worth your time. Something this good is often hard to put into words – so just go out and see it!
