SHINICHI WATANABE’S THOUGHTS ON ANIME PIRACY
Monday, 22 October 2007
Here are six video clips of Shinichi “Nabeshin” Watanabe with his responses and thoughts about piracy during his guest appearance at Greg Ayres' Anime Bootleg Panel at Oni-Con this past Saturday.

Greg Ayres has been on a crusade to educate anime fans about the ramifications of illegal anime downloads and manga scanlations for about three years now. He has been conducting panels at many anime conventions and has recently had Shinichi Watanabe as his special guest. When Mr. Watanabe found out that there is such a panel, he requested that his scheduled appearances be changed at the convention he was attending so that he could stop by and join Greg’s panel.

It is a rarity that a Japanese artist or director would speak about such a controversial topic in the industry, but who would be better than Mr. Watanabe to gave the fans some thoughts and insight about the hotly debated topic – Nabeshin Style.

Introduction and his thoughts on fans downloading his work

His thoughts on fansubbing

How does the Japanese creators feel about piracy?

Effects of illegal downloads on Mr. Watanabe

His thoughts on illegal downloading in the U.S

Ways on how to discourage illegal downloads and conclusion

Active Anime would like to thank Mr. Shinichi Watanabe for giving us the permission to post these video clips.

The whole pannel was very informitive and scarry.

Shinichi Watanabe was very serious about the fact that downloading is stealing and that when he does not get paid his insperation is not there and so he produces less.

The main message was that if the downloading is not stopped the anime industry will be gone in Japan in the next 5 years. As the Japanese studios are all funded by the US anime companies. We have lost one company and cannot afford to loose another one.

It was an honor and a privelage to meet Mr. Shinichi Watanabe not once but twice, unfortunately the second time Mr. Watanabe was not the happy go lucky man we know him. He was very seriouse this past sunday as Zacola has stated, but as
Greg Ayres said him self. Mr. Watanabe who probably never frowns was extreamly passionate and seriouse about the piracy/bootleg topic. It was an eye opening experiance.

Sad state of affairs, if they don't make money, they will not care to produce more works.
It will be a less entertaining world.

There are so many people who recognise the problem and hope to change things. But I fear there are many others that turn a blind eye to what is said. Whenever I try to tell someone it's wrong to download, they complain about not having money, etc. I hope we can get through to these stubborn individuals before it's too late.

This was interesting, sadly I don't think fan subs are going to stop in time.
